Back to Food – Eat Well Guide

logo-tagAs those of you who know me personally know, I was a vegetarian for many years and once I married Jeff, I started eating meat (in return, he started eating vegetables).  While I have given up my vegetarian ways, I have not given up the goal of healthy eating.

Eat Well Guide gives readers ton of information about locally grown food in the US and Canada.  As the site says, Eat Well Guide provides a listing of “family farms, restaurants, farmers’ markets, grocery stores, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, U-pick orchards and more.”  The site is pretty easy to use – just type in a keyword, zip code, or city to get a listing broken down by category (bakery, butcher, etc.).  Personally, I love the Seasonal Food Guide (under Featured Guides at the top) which tells you what is in season where you live.  Also in the Featured Guide section you can find guides for different large cities and a guide for when you travel.

Eat Well Guide also has a blog, Green Fork Blog, which offers commentary on issues in the sustainable, local, organic food world.  I loved the post about healthy school lunches. Even though I don’t have kiddos, healthy school lunches are an important issue for many families out there.

Cooking Not Take Out

With money tight for everyone, more and more of us are cooking at home. If you’re like me, you quickly have run out of recipes (because you used to eat out all of the time!?!?). Thanks to my friend, Kim, I have discovered NoTakeOut.com.

NoTakeOut.com provides a daily recipe every day Monday – Friday and you can subscribe to the newsletter so the recipes come right to your mailbox. The recipes feed a family of four and NoTakeOut.com gives you a shopping list, a pantry list, tools you’ll need and wine and dessert suggestions! Since Chicago has become Seattle as far as weather is concerned, today’s recipe is for a new fangled (in a good way) chicken soup. The recipes are quick and easy and the instructions are very specific so anyone (and you know who you are) can cook!

Past recipes are listed on the site as well as interesting pieces about food and the food industry. I love that NoTakeOut.com embraces meatless Mondays (now if only Jeff would. too!). Did you know that at the international summit on global warming, United Nations emissaries cited meat production as a primary source of greenhouse gas? Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change called eating less meat “one of the most important personal choices we can make to address climate change.” And, it’s good for you, too!
